The Surf Hostel
Center Ville, Taghazout 80020, Morocco
The Agadir Mag take
The Surf Hostel divides cleanly between those who loved it and one traveller who found it wanting. Four reviewers—all five stars—praise the rooftop, the staff (Ismael, Youssef, Mehdi especially), and the social atmosphere. Mehdi’s local surf knowledge and willingness to arrange lessons or fishing trips comes up repeatedly. The location in Centre Ville suits people wanting Taghazout’s hub.
But a two-star review flags real problems: inadequate toilets (two wet rooms for 40+ guests), cramped dorms with poor plug placement and no bedside lights, unreliable wifi. Staff conduct—smoking in reception—and the rooftop aside, facilities feel tight. Private rooms apparently worse: one reviewer called theirs “a prison cell.” The rating disparity suggests experience hinges heavily on timing, staff mood, and dorm versus private choice. Best suited to sociable surfers prioritising community and Mehdi’s local intel over comfort.

Great customer service by Ismael and Youssef who were very flexible and let me stay and shower until 8pm while checkout was at 12. I recommend this hostel for the great rooftop , but maybe not the private bedroom which looked more like a prison cell w no bed light, no window or any air ventilation
Ismail is the nicest person for reception at this place. Had a lovely time here, on Friday hajar made the nicest couscous. What’s a group of legends. Will come back for sure !!!!
The surf hostel is the best hostel in town, best people and location is perfect for the town. The hostel is very social and you can guarantee to meet great people. the staff is very friendly and helpful with anything you need and medhi does great surf lessons and surfboard hire. They give the best local knowledge.
Having travelled a fair bit and tried many different hostels, I'd say this was probably the best of them all. The hostel itself is pretty and clean while being just the right size. The rooftop is very nice for chilling out or gathering with other travellers. Last but not least, the staff is wonderful and very welcoming. Special mention for Mehdi who knows tons about surfing, can tell when and where to go for the best waves and who's happy to take you fishing on surfboards when the sea is flat. Will definitely be coming back 🙂
I don’t understand why this hostel is rated 9.5 stars on Hostelworld or why it’s so high on google either. The place has potential to be so lovely but currently so not worth such high ratings. The staff were not welcoming, they smoked (tobacco and marijuana) in the reception area (which is located right next to 2 of the rooms, and they washed raw fish in the downstairs sink on multiple occasions!! The 6 bed room was dark and cramped. No plugs next to the beds only one extension by the door. No personal lights/lamps. WiFi was very unreliable. The 2 toilets (for a whole hostel of at least 40 people) were also wet rooms which meant if someone was showering you would have to wait 15 minutes to access a toilet. The wet rooms also had no area to place or hang items so everything in the room got soaked. Wouldn’t be such an issue if the rooms were large enough to get changed in but since they weren’t, you had to get changed in the wet rooms. The terrace was a redeemable aspect with a nice view and the location is ideal but overall the staff need to do their job better, the hostel needs to stop scamming tourists for the tours and taxis they arrange, and the facilities need small but necessary improvements. It’s such a shame because it wouldn’t take a lot to make this a lovely hostel.
